WELCOME CITIZEN. YOUR GOVERNMENT IS ENFORCING A NEW REGULATION. DURING THE NEXT MONTH, YOU WILL SPEND TIME IN YOUR HOME MODULE CREATING A SONG. YOU WILL NOT BE MAKING A GOOD SONG. IN FACT, YOU WILL MAKE A BAD SONG. ONCE YOU HAVE CREATED A BAD SONG, YOU WILL SUBMIT IT TO THE SCRATCHOVISION SONG CONTEST FOR INSPECTION. IF YOUR SONG IS OF SUFFICIENTLY AWFUL QUALITY, YOU MAY WIN A PRIZE. NO, IT IS NOT FREEDOM. STOP ASKING US FOR FREEDOM. IT IS GREAT HERE. YOU WILL ENJOY YOURSELF.

> so uh what even is this

The Scratchovision Song Contest is back already! I’m not gonna have time to run it properly next year, or at least not at the right time, so instead it’s gonna happen this December. Exciting, right?

If you don’t know already, Scratchovision is an annual bad song contest in the spirit of Eurovision. Prior music experience is absolutely not required and maybe even discouraged – since the aim is to make bad music, there are no expectations of quality. If you’re looking for a way to try out music making without any pressure – or if you’re a seasoned artist who wants a break – then this is the perfect chance.

Submissions will be open from now until the 13th of January, since I know everyone’s busy at different times. After that, the songs will be publicly voted on, and the winner will win. The details of the vote will be confirmed closer to the time as it’ll depend on how many songs are submitted (there may need to be multiple rounds or a shortlist or something).

As you may have gathered from the top of the page, this year’s theme is dystopia, because this is supposed to be the 2019 contest, and 2019 is the year Blade Runner was set. This theme should be nice and broad, so you could go full 80s and do some stuff that’s like cyberpunk or wavewave or even protest music or whatever… look, I don’t know what genres are, I just listen to noises that make me feel nice. Following the theme isn’t a hard requirement but it might help guide your song.

So, good luck. And remember… the Government will probably execute you if you don’t enter.

> but im lonely and dont know how to maek a bleepy bloop

If you click here, you can join the Discord server for the contest. On there you’ll find a group of fellow friendly musicians chatting about music (or more likely anything but). It’s a good place to find people to collaborate with if you don’t want to limit yourself to a solo entry.

> oh ok how do I enter then

You click this link and fill out the form!

There are a couple of rules, but really anything goes:

  1. You can only submit one track on your own, but if you collaborate with others, you can submit as many as you want, as long as each track is made by a different set of people.
  2. Entries do not have to have been created originally for this contest (although it’d be nice), but they can’t have been submitted for a previous Scratchovision.
  3. Your entry must be your own work, or at least yours to submit.
  4. Please don’t submit anything inappropriate (if in doubt, check with me on Discord; it might just need an edit). Ideally the listener will be the one shouting obscenities, not you.

Worst of luck to you all! Get ready to fear for your ear in the futuear…
