Anyway, it seems the mystery attacker was Cloud, who hopefully doesn’t look too weird in this setting (this is literally the only artwork of him that vaguely fits, and I had to add emotions manually and very badly). He’s not going to be an eighth regular like Shulk, he’ll just show up every now and again for some quick gag. Also, as a disclaimer, I’ve never actually played a Final Fantasy game, let alone VII, which is why I’ve left Cloud basically personality-free. I apologise if I got something wrong.
